Bhallagchena: The Mood That Has No English Translation

There is no English word for ভাল্লাগছেনা.

People try. Not feeling it. Meh. Ennui — which is French and therefore too dramatic. Listless. Blah. None of them land. They are approximations. They describe adjacent states but miss the specific Bengali texture of ভাল্লাগছেনা, which is its own precise, named experience.

Here is what it is not: it is not sadness. You can be sad about something. Sadness has an object. বিষণ্ণতা has weight and reason and the decency to explain itself. ভাল্লাগছেনা does not bother with explanation.

It is not anger. Anger is energetic. Anger wants to do something. ভাল্লাগছেনা does not want to do anything.

It is not even unhappiness. Unhappiness implies a state you would like to leave. ভাল্লাগছেনা is too tired to leave.

ভাল্লাগছেনা is the mood of a Sunday afternoon when everything is technically fine. The food was good. Nothing bad happened. Nobody called with bad news. The weather is acceptable. And yet: ভাল্লাগছেনা. You are not impressed with your own life right now. Not devastated by it — just unimpressed.

It is the most honest mood. It does not perform. It does not ask for sympathy. It just sits there, on the bed, looking at the ceiling, aware that it could be doing something but not quite able to generate the motivation to determine what that something would be.

The Bengali genius is that this mood has a name. A specific, phonetically perfect name. The sound of ভাল্লাগছেনা captures exactly what it means: the slight drag on the first syllable, the trailing na that deflates at the end. It sounds like itself.

The T-shirt does not fix ভাল্লাগছেনা. Nothing fixes ভাল্লাগছেনা except time and possibly a good cup of tea and maybe a nap. But the T-shirt names it. And sometimes that is the most you can ask for.
